Facebook announced the integration of Messenger Rooms , a feature that allows users to create video conference rooms, and invite anyone to join. People can join from Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Portal or simply through a link, so it is not necessary to have an account on any of these social networks.
Messenger Rooms, which allows video calls with the capacity to connect 50 people at the same time –– and without a time limit–– came as an alternative to services such as Zoom, Skype, Hangouts, and other video conferencing applications.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, Messenger Rooms will launch “in some countries” during the last week of April, and then go worldwide. However, the company did not provide further details.
How to create a room in Messenger Rooms
Once you have the function available, these are the steps you have to follow to create a room from the mobile app:
- Open the Messenger app.
- Click on the People icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Click Create a Room, and select the people you want to invite.
- To connect with people who do not have a Facebook account, you can share the link to the room. Likewise, you can share the room within the news feed, in groups or within events.
Users will be able to join the videoconference from their cell phones and computers, without the need to download software. In the future, Facebook will add ways to create rooms from Instagram, WhatsApp, and Portal.
Regarding privacy, Facebook indicated that by creating a video conference room the host will be able to choose who can see the room and who can join. Likewise, the host can remove users from the room or create a private session to avoid unexpected visits.
